On behalf of the Republican Party of St. Croix County, I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving! As one of our nation’s most beloved holidays, my prayer is that everyone takes the opportunity to thank Almighty God for the blessings we have been given, including the blessing of freedom! This is the fundamental principle on which the Republican Party was founded, namely to abolish slavery and provide the gift of freedom and liberty to all people in this nation. With the Emancipation Proclamation, the Republican Party under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln fulfilled the mandate from our founding fathers in the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal”. When given the opportunity, I like to share the Preamble to the Wisconsin Constitution as it points us to the source of this freedom and reminds us of who we are as a people. “We, the people of Wisconsin, grateful to Almighty God for our freedom, in order to secure its blessings, form a more perfect government, insure domestic tranquility and promote the general welfare, do establish this constitution.” Article 1, sec. 1 goes on to paraphrase the Declaration of Independence stating, ” All people are born equally free and independent, and have certain inherent rights; among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; to secure these rights, governments are instituted, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” Sec. 22 goes on to tell us how to keep our freedom. ” The blessings of a free government can only be maintained by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality and virtue, and by frequent recurrence to fundamental principles.” As members of the Republican Party, we must never forget where we came from, how we got here, and what we must to do to preserve what we have been given. In closing, as we celebrate this Thanksgiving holiday, let’s join with our founding fathers in being grateful to Almighty God for the precious freedoms and liberties we enjoy!
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His Love endures forever.”
