As Election Day gets closer, you will be contacted first by Kristie Farnham with RPSCC and by the municipal clerk to confirm your interest in serving and then for your interest in working.
An election official is defined as “an individual who is charged with any duties relating to the conduct of an election.” Wis. Stat. § 5.02(4e). This includes chief inspectors, poll workers, greeters, tabulators, and high school poll workers. An election official performs a very important public service by enhancing the quality and integrity of Wisconsin’s elections.
Poll workers are appointed to two-year terms so you will be asked to make a minimum two-year commitment. If for some reason you are unable to work an election, the clerk you are assigned to work with will likely be able to make arrangements for coverage as long as you provide ample notice
Each town, village, and city clerk will provide training. You will also be asked to sign an oath of office and fill out a W-9 form if you wish to be compensated for your service.
Poll worker shifts are between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. In many municipalities, accommodations can be made for election inspectors to work split shifts.
Signing up does not guarantee you will be contacted to work an election, contact your municipal clerk if you want to work.
Adding your name to this list will ensure that you receive communications regarding election observer guidelines, tips, reminders, and training.
There is no specific commitment involved with being an election observer. Simply show up and observe voting and the election administration process at polling places on Election Day anytime between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Stay for as little or as long as you like.
Observers are most often present at a polling location on Election Day but may also be present at a facility served by special voting deputies, at a municipal clerk’s office during in-person absentee voting, at a central counting location, or at a recount.
Election Observers are required to check in with the election official in charge upon arrival. You will be required to show a current ID and provide your full name, street address, and municipality on an Election Observer Log, which you will then need to sign, acknowledging and agreeing to follow the rules as outlined in Wis. Stat. § 7.41(1).
An Observer must wear a tag or badge which reads “Election Observer,” and which shall be worn at all times.
You may choose to work independently when being an observer, or you may work with the State Republican Party (WISGOP) who will assist you in finding where to observe. To do so, please contact Jenna Banfield, at jbanfield@wis.gop, The Wisconsin Election Integrity Director, who will contact you further.
