Background: Last Spring, the City of Eau Claire invited the World Relief (Wisconsin) to open an office in Eau Claire. The purpose of which is to prepare to receive 75 refugees, initially, to live in Eau Claire or 100-mile radius. No notice of this plan was made public until it was reported in October by TV-18.
Why was a matter that will have a profound impact on the future of Eau Claire kept secret from the public?
The City of Eau Claire and World Relief representatives held a public informational meeting on Monday, October 23 rd. Many city residents left the meeting with more questions about the financial impact of hosting these refugees than they received answers to. That is why this meeting is being held.
SOME QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS:
1. Where will these 75 refugees come from?
2. What is the make-up of the refugees? Are they single, married, families?
3. What, if any, health concerns do the refugees have?
4. If the City of Eau Claire (along with World Relief) brings in 75 refugees the first year, how many will be brought in subsequent years using the chain migration?
5. What public financial assistance will these refugees require and for how long?
6. Who, or what agency, is going to provide resources for education of children, language instruction so people can be employed, food services, health services, housing, and transportation.
7. What type of financial impact, via taxes, would this have on the citizens of the area.
8. Eau Claire already has a homeless problem and apparently there are not enough resources to assist homeless people. How will the city be able to pay the costs to subsidize these refugees?
